Surprised by Beauty

“Love of beauty and the desire to create it is a primal instinct of man.” Eleanor McMillan Brown

This weekend brought me the privilege of chaperoning forty musicians to the Catskill Mountains of New York for a youth orchestra retreat. Designed as a scenic get-away in which to ardently rehearse for an upcoming concert, it proved an exhausting-but delightful-escape with teens.

Considering that I made the preliminary arrangements, and actually booked the accommodations at the retreat center, I thought I had a fairly good idea of what to expect. When the retreat director described our cabins as “rustic,” I envisioned cute and cozy. Campy. Kind of with a Ralph Lauren meets L.L. Bean thing

A Few “Notes” On the History of Music

Music is major part of our everyday life. Music also has a long, complex and captivating history. It may predate language, and most certainly predates the written word. It is found in every known human culture, both past and present, varying wildly between certain periods and locations on the globe. The music of every culture is influenced by all other aspect of that culture, such as social and economic organization, climate, and access to technology.

The development of human music occurred against the backdrop of natural sounds like the lapping of ocean waves, the rippling of river water, the singing of birds and sounds created by other animals. Prehistoric music, more commonly referred to as primitive

Piano Sheet Music

Piano sheet music is a printed musical notation for piano. Before phonograph and radio became popular, sheet music was used by musicians to make their compositions known to the people. Many of these were piano sheet music since piano was the most popular musical instrument back then.

In the late 19th century, piano sheet music became even more popular as parlor music became a massive trend in the US at the time. Parlor music was a kind of popular music that was performed in a parlor, a small room in a house where performers play a musical piece before an audience. Almost all middle-class homes during this period had parlors and a piano.

Concerts - Renaissance At Carnegie Hall

In this article we’re going to review one of the most controversial concerts in pop rock history, the Renaissance Concert At Carnegie Hall.

One may wonder why this would be such a controversial concert. After all, Renaissance was not some drug induced band with a reputation for trashing venues. There was nothing offensive about their lyrics.

And yet, there were many people at the time who felt that Andrew Carnegie would be turning over in his grave if he knew that the art rock band Renaissance was going to be playing at the hall named after him. After all, Carnegie Hall was a place where only the greatest classical musicians got to play. This is where we heard

How to Improvise Using a Few Chords

When a painter is getting ready to paint, a color palette is usually chosen first. For example, if a forest is to be painted, the artist may choose browns, greens, and blues for the sky. Once the palette is chosen, it makes it easier to create the painting. Why? Because color decisions are now out of the way.

We can apply this concept to music as well. In particular, New Age piano playing. In your lesson, Reflections in Water, we have four chords to play with and we have the order in which they are to be played. Now, all that is required “to paint” your sound portrait is the ability to take these chords and play around with them.
